Tariq Al-Barwani from Oman, Master of Information Technology

Tariq Al-Barwani (right) became the first Omani student to graduate with a Masters of Information Technology degree from Swinburne University of Technology in 2004.

Mr Al-Barwani, well-known in Oman as a media commentator on information and communications technology issues, attained a distinction average in the 11-month Masters course he undertook at Swinburne's Hawthorn campus.

Mr Al-Barwani said what set Swinburne apart from other universities was that it offered IT courses that were highly relevant to the needs of industry.

"Unlike other universities, Swinburne's courses are practical as well as being theory-based. I chose to study at Swinburne because the university offers cutting-edge IT courses and technology that ensure graduates are ahead of the rest in the job market.

"I also gained a lot of valuable experience working for the ICT faculty at Swinburne. As an international student, I had the benefit of meeting other students from around the world, as well as Australian students, and sharing and exchanging information with them. This is the sort of valuable international experience that is highly sought after in the workplace," Mr Al-Barwani said.

Mr Al-Barwani gained his undergraduate degree, a Bachelor of Computer Science with Honours, at one of Canada's top universities, the University of Acadia. He has now returned to Oman where he aims to "serve my people and put Oman firmly on the global IT map".

Sarinda Perera from Sri Lanka
Bachelor of Arts (Media and Communications)

Sarinda Perera (right) recently completed a Bachelor of Arts (Media and Communications), majoring in Politics at Swinburne's Hawthorn campus. It is a time which he calls perhaps the most memorable two and a half years of his life. Sarinda recently wrote us a letter with the following comments about his Swinburne experience:

"My academic experience was most enlightening - it influenced my life in unquantifiable ways. The support and guidance I received from faculty staff shaped both my intellect and personality alike. I still maintain this contact.

"Whilst at Swinburne, I was heavily involved in diverse aspects of student life, from general recreation to hosting international orientation, from active membership in clubs and societies, to my involvement with the student union and from wider student governance to my role on university boards and committees. The opportunities and the experience I gained through these involvements are those I could not have hoped for, had I not undertaken this sojourn. At Swinburne, for the large part (through my experiences) I exceeded my own expectations.

"In retrospect I can confidently say that I gained a full university experience. There is perhaps not much that I can say I haven't been a part of while at university. It is now time to move on but I will always look back with a sense of fondness and nostalgia at my undergraduate days.

"Thank you Swinburne International, for your receptiveness to the welfare concerns of international students. Thank you Swinburne, for the opportunity of a life-time!"

Helena Sophy Nanlohy from Indonesia

Helena Sophy NanlohyHelena Sophy Nanlohy from Indonesia (right) completed a Bachelor of Arts (Mass Communication and Japanese) at Swinburne which enabled her to establish a career back in her home country.

Helena’s current position is as Key Accounts Manager for International SOS. The role is focused on the management, development and growth of key SOS contracts, identifying potential key accounts (particularly Indonesian companies) and putting in place and leading a strategy to grow the business with the account. The role also involves the development of the business at key SOS contracts by supporting operations staff and building, maintaining and executing sales strategy and account management plans to ensure retention of key SOS customers, whilst significantly growing the business.

Helena chose Swinburne having been awarded a scholarship to study in Melbourne, Australia. For her, it was like a dream come true as she wanted to follow her seniors at high school who also received scholarships to study in Australia. She recognised Australia as a country with a high quality education system.

Helena’s Bachelor of Arts (Mass Communication and Japanese) course furthered her interest in mass communication as she always aspired to being a practitioner in the area. The course provided her with both theoretical and practical knowledge in Media and Japanese.

Helena found that Swinburne’s Hawthorn campus provided easy access to public transport, accommodation and food and found it to be a friendly study environment with very helpful Swinburne staff.

She believes the highlight of her time at Swinburne was being exposed to many different cultures. At Swinburne, she studied Japanese, Aboriginal Studies and Media Studies and made friends with students from different nationalities, helping her to better appreciate different cultures.
