English Language Requirements

English Language skills are measured by IELTS (International English Language Test Score) or TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) and the minimum requirements vary depending on the course to be applied for.

You may not require an IELTS or TOEFL score to apply for a course if you:
Are studying English at the Swinburne English Language Centre;
Had English as the language of instruction during previous education; or
Previously completed an International Baccalaureate or GCE 'A' Level;
Studied English in some European countries.

If you are having your English Language results sent directly to Swinburne, please note that Swinburne University of Technology's TOEFL institution code is 0054 00. For IELTS, please nominate "Swinburne University of Technology" in Section 24 of the Application form.

Applicants from Swinburne English Language Centre

You must complete English for Academic Purposes (Level 2) module with teacher's recommendation for the appropriate level of study. You will not need to do the IELTS or TOEFL unless your student visa requires it. Further information regarding visa requirements and applications is available from the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) web site.

Applicants with English as the language of instruction

If you have received a satisfactory performance of an Australian Year 12 or equivalent program, you may have met the TAFE and Undergraduate English language requirements. Each application will be assessed separately. Please contact Swinburne International for more information.

Applicants with GCE 'A' Level

You must obtain a score of 'C' or better for A level English from one of Singapore, Hong Kong, Britain, Kenya or South Africa.

Applicants with International Baccalaureate

Minimum of 4 in English A1 or A2 (Higher and Standard Levels) or Minimum of 5 in English B (Higher Level)

Applicants from some European countries

   

Denmark

Studentereksamen grade 7 in English Level A or grade 10 in English Level B

Germany

Abitur minimum 3 in English and B in all sections of the DAAD language test

Netherlands

Voorbereidend Wetenschappelijk Onderwijs minimum 7 in English

Norway
