Visiting Study Abroad and Exchange Students - How to Apply

Follow the steps below to apply for a Study Abroad at Swinburne University of Technology. Click on the links below for more information.

1. Ensure you meet the Swinburne Study Abroad entrance requirements

ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS

To be eligible for the program you generally must have successfully completed a year of study at a higher education institution. US students are expected to have a GPA of 2.6 or higher.

Students from institutions teaching in languages other than English must provide evidence of language proficiency as follows:

IELTS: 6.0 overall (no band score below 6.0)
Computer-based TOEFL: 213 with essay writing score 5
Internet- based TOEFL: 80 (no band score below 20)

. Applicants from Scandinavia (Denmark , Finland , Norway and Sweden) may provide Secondary School English results in support of their English ability.

. Applicants from Germany may provide DAAD: a minimum of "B" in all four skill areas, plus Abitur English results of 7.0/grade 3 in the final three years of secondary school OR Fachhochschulreife (Certificate of Advanced Level vocational secondary school) with an English mark of at least 3.0 (Satisfactory) and DAAD with a minimum of "B" in all four skill areas.

2. Develop your Swinburne study plan

. Guidelines for Choosing Subjects at Swinburne has been created to assist you with developing your Swinburne study plan.

. Ensure the subjects are available in your Study Abroad semester/s by checking the Swinburne Timetable website

•  Make sure that you meet any prerequisites that your desired subjects may have.

•  A full-time credit load at Swinburne University of Technology is 50 SUT credits. Most subjects at Swinburne are worth 12.5 SUT credits. We recommend you list at least six subjects on your application form in order of preference, in case one of your subjects is not available or not suitable.

3. Complete the application form

• For assistance with applying, students from partner institutions should seek advice from their home university's International Office. Other students who have any questions while completing the application form can email studyabroad@swinburne.edu.au.

• Application dates vary. If you are an exchange student please contact your home university regarding application deadlines. If you are applying for the Study Abroad program please contact studyabroad@swin.edu.au

•  If you are applying for a program in the Faculty of Design, you are required to submit a portfolio of work with your application - the Portfolio / Show Reel Guidelines (PDF 61KB) have been created to assist you with this. All portfolios should include current work completed at your home institution that demonstrates a high level of technical and creative merit. All work submitted would be of an appropriate standard for the level of subjects you are applying for at the Faculty of Design.

4. Provide supporting documentation

• Official academic transcript from your home university. Transcripts in languages other than English must be translated and certified.

• Evidence of English language proficiency (if required)

5. Submit application and documentation

6. Receive your Offer

• Your application will be assessed. If it is approved, Swinburne will make you an offer. This will include:

- Official offer letter
- Offer Acceptance Form
- Confirmation of your Swinburne study plan

7. Accept your offer

• It is important that you read all information carefully and return the requested Offer Acceptance Form and confirm details of your Swinburne study plan to Swinburne International by the due date, as advised.

8. Apply for your student visa

• On the receipt of your Offer Acceptance Form, Swinburne will issue your Electronic Confirmation of Enrolment (eCoE). The eCoE is the document needed to apply for your student visa.

•  For information on applying for your student visa visit the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) website.

•  As an international student in Australia you are permitted to work 20 hours a week during semester. If you are intending to work, you will need to apply for a work permit. You cannot apply for a work permit until classes have commenced and a $50 fee applies.

9. Request airport pickup & temporary accommodation

• You can now arrange airport pickup and/or temporary accommodation through our Online Booking System. Once we have received this form, we will send you email confirmation of your pickup and/or temporary accommodation.

• On campus accommodation is available at the Hawthorn and Lilydale campuses. There also options such as private student accommodation, homestay and share house living. An International Housing Officer will be available upon arrival to assist you with finding suitable accommodation. You will be placed in temporary accommodation (if necessary) until you locate permanent accommodation.

10. Arrive in Melbourne

• You need to arrive in Melbourne prior to the Education Abroad Orientation. This compulsory program is a great opportunity to meet your fellow Study Abroad students.

• Don't forget you must contact an Education Abroad Advisor in the Swinburne International office on arrival.
