Scholarships and Travel Grants for programs abroad

Japanese blossomThe Education Abroad office administers a number of scholarships and travel grants. There are many sources of scholarships, including the Australian Government, Swinburne’s Education Abroad Fund, Swinburne Alumni, the Pridmore Scholarship fund and other external bodies.
 
Big BenSome of these are awarded by the Education Abroad office after applications for exchange have been received. Others need to be applied for concurrently with or after an exchange application has been submitted. Application forms are available from the Education Abroad office. Eligibility criteria apply.

The following scholarships and travel grants are available for students studying abroad as part of their Swinburne program in Semester 2, 2008 or Semester 1, 2009.

Endeavour International Student Exchange Program Scholarships

The Australian Government annually grants scholarships to Swinburne students under three funding programs for the international exchange program. The following scholarships will be awarded in Semester 2, 2008 and Semester 1, 2009:

Australian UMAP Program
3 x $5000 for exchange to USA
2 x $5000 for exchange to Mexico
4 x $5000 for exchange to Japan

Endeavour Cheung Kong Student Exchange Program
1 x $5000 for exchange to Republic of Korea
2 x $5000 for exchange to Hong Kong
1 x $5000 for exchange to Japan

Endeavour Student Exchange Program 
2 x $5000 for exchange to Republic of Korea

  • Eligibility criteria apply – students must be Australian citizens and undergraduate students. Students must submit an International Exchange Program application to the Education Abroad office and will be considered for the scholarships available from this application.


    Alumni Destination Specific Scholarships

    Funding for students undertaking the International Exchange Program is granted through the generous contributions of Swinburne Alumni.

    Ten scholarships of $2000 will be offered for Semester 2, 2008, to specific destinations:

    • Sweden
    • Austria
    • France
    • The Netherlands
    • Germany

    Semester 1, 2009 funding in this category will be announced in mid-2008. These funding opportunities will be awarded based on the following criteria:

    • Complete timely application
    • Academic merit
    • Interview
    • Reasons for wanting to participate in the exchange program
    • Reasons for selecting the partner institution

    European Consortium of Innovative Universities

    As a member of the European Consortium of Innovative Universities (ECIU), Swinburne recognises the importance of student mobility between members of this consortium.

    As part of the Education Abroad Fund, there are ten scholarships of $2500 available for students applying for exchange or other mobility programs at ECIU partners for Semester 2, 2008 or Semester 1, 2009:

    • Aalborg Universitet, Denmark
    • Technische Universität Hamburg-Harburg, Germany
    • Universität Dortmund, Germany
    • University of Strathclyde, United Kingdom
    • Universiteit Twente, The Netherlands
    • Politecnico di Torino, Italy
    • Linköpings universitet, Sweden
    • Tecnológico de Monterrey (Monterrey campus), Mexico
    Eligibility: Students must submit an International Exchange Program application to the Education Abroad office and will be considered for the scholarships available from this application.


    Sarawak
    Scholarships

    Exchange at Sarawak
    Swinburne Sarawak scholarships have been established as part of the Education Abroad Fund to encourage student mobility between Swinburne's campuses in Melbourne and Sarawak (Malaysia), as well as offer students the opportunity to explore our connections in Asia and gain invaluable cultural experiences.

    10 scholarships of $2000 will be offered to students undertaking a one-semester exchange at Swinburne's Sarawak campus in Malaysia. This amount is provided to support students' airfare costs to the island of Borneo, home to the state of Sarawak. Once there, students will find that living costs are very affordable.

    Eligibility: Students must submit an International Exchange Program application to the Education Abroad office and from this application will be considered for the scholarships available.

    Electives Plus at Sarawak
    Electives Plus @ Sarawak scholarships, as part of the Pridmore Fund, have been established to assist students in taking the winter term study tour to fast-track their degree by one or two units. as well as offer students the opportunity to explore Malaysia and gain invaluable cultural experiences.
    20 scholarships of $1000 are available for this program.


    Postgraduate Scholarships

    Six scholarships of $2500 will be offered to postgraduate students undertaking an International Exchange Program or another eligible mobility program at a Swinburne partner institution. This funding is part of the 2008 Education Abroad Fund.

    Students can consider exchange to partner universities such as (but not limited to):

    • UIAH Helsinki, Finland
    • Universiteit Twente, The Netherlands
    • Universität Dortmund, Germany
    • Aalborg Universitet, Denmark
    • Other partner universities with post-graduate exchange offerings
    Eligibility: Students must submit an International Exchange Program application to the Education Abroad office and will be considered for the scholarships available from this application.


    TAFE Education Abroad Scholarships

    TAFE students will be given an opportunity to undertake International Exchange and Study Tour programs in 2008 to gain international experience in their studies.

    To support this, a total of $17,000 worth of scholarships has been made available, to be allocated in varying amounts depending on the length of each student's program.


    Future Leaders Program Scholarships

    Swinburne’s Future Leaders Program for undergraduate students is a study tour of China which includes industry visits and leadership skills development.

    As a program for high-achieving students, $17,000 has been allocated to funding students on this program. $1000 grants will be awarded to 17 participating students.


    Vice Chancellor's Education Abroad Scholarship

    The Vice-Chancellor's Education Abroad Scholarship is a $5000 scholarship for the International Exchange Program, to be awarded in both Semester 2, 2008 and Semester 1, 2009.

    Applicants will be subject to an involved selection process. The successful applicant will be expected to demonstrate academic excellence and consistency, have a motivated and mature approach, possess well-developed interpersonal and ambassadorial skills, as well as a demonstrated commitment to Swinburne and wider communities.

    Study Tour and Short Term Program Scholarships


    The Education Abroad Fund in 2008 will award scholarships to participants in faculty and school-specific study tours. Scholarships available include:

    Faculty of Design

    German Study Tour: up to 4 x $1000

    Hong Kong Study Tour: up to 4 x $1000

    Faculty of Life & Social Sciences

    Cultural Study Tour: up to 4 x $1000

    Faculty of Higher Education Lilydale

    International Business Study Tour: up to 4 x $1000

    Faculty of Business & Enterprise

    Asia Pacific Rim Study Tour: up to 4 x $1000

    European Union Study Tour: up to 4 x $1000

    Treviso program: up to 4 x $1000

    TAFE
    The London Experience program: up to 4 x $1000
    Child and Family Studies China Preferential program: up to 4 x $1000
    The Fire Study Tour: up to 4 x $1000
    NICA
    Circus Tour: up to 4 x $1000

     

















     






    Eligibility: Students must submit their study tour or short term program application to the relevant department and from this application will be considered for the scholarships available.

    Other new study tours and short-term programs may be available and may also have scholarships on offer. Please check with your adviser.


    Country specific scholarships

    For information on any country specific scholarships available please check with the consulate/embassy of your host country.

    JASSO scholarships
    This scholarship is generally awarded each year for students to study Japanese language and culture in Japan. For more information please contact the Japanese department in the School of Business or the Education Abroad office.

    Austrian Airfare Stipend
    Swinburne's partner in Austria, Fachhochschule Wiener Neustadt offers airfare stipends of €700 per student towards their airfare costs. They have several of these stipends available and they are to be awarded to those students selected by the Education Abroad office as being most deserving of such a financial award.

    Jönköping, Sweden
    One scholarship of SEK5000 (approximately AU$1000) is offered by the Jönköping School of Education and Communication in Sweden for a student to undertake exchange in Semester 2, 2008.

    To be nominated for this scholarship, students must submit their exchange application to the Education Abroad office and will be considered for the scholarship from this application.


    External Scholarship Programs

    Darmasiswa Scholarship Program – Indonesia

    Darmasiswa is a scholarship program offered to foreign students to study Indonesian language, arts, music and crafts. Participants can choose to study at universities and colleges participating in the program.

    The purpose of the Darmasiswa program is to foster interest in the language and culture of Indonesia among citizens of friendly countries.

    The Darmasiswa program is a non-degree program undertaken within a year's duration, not leading to any credit towards a Swinburne course or degree.
